A new film can sometimes (but need not) overshadow the previous accomplishments on the small screen.Specifically, I believe that now is not the time to overlook Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, the third live action television series to be set in the Star Trek universe. In this atmosphere of Trek-related excitement, this is the perfect time for old fans to rediscover Deep Space Nine and for younger fans to uncover it for the first time.
Why was Star Trek Deep Space Nine so fantastic?

  • DS9 featured complex inter-relationships between the central characters that some of the other Trek series sometimes lacked.
  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine developed an intricate mythology that rewarded long time viewers with layers of complexity.
  • This show featured a respect for the earlier shows, seen in several episodes that refer back to concepts and characters from the original Star Trek series.

Some fans, in their excitement about the present, have lost sight of the accomplishments of the past. For nearly every fan has a star trek dvd collection but how many of those same fans have dedicated space in their entertainment library for Star Trek Deep Space Nine?
This is not the time to forget about one of the finest science fiction dramas of all time. I believe that with the new excitement about Star Trek the movie that the time is now to to begin to look to the past and to embrace some of the Star Trek shows that have come before. In this vein, I believe that every serious Trekkie like me needs to consider including a deep space nine dvd in their home video collection.
